    April 21 -- Republic of Texas International Boundary Marker

    A special event station commemorating the only international boundary marker, which is entirely surrounded by US soil, is held each April. The marker is located at the Texas-Louisiana border in Panola County, Texas. This granite shaft bears the date 1840 but was not set until April 23, 1841. Established as a boundary marker between the Republic of Texas and the United States, the stone now separates Texas and Louisiana at a location of 32° 00’ 02” North 94° 02’ 33” West. All stations contacted during this event will receive a serialized certificate suitable for framing by sending a SASE.

    May 4-6Celebration of Flight Balloonfest

    An annual event held at the Panola County Airport in Carthage, Texas. Running from Friday to Sunday, it is a weekend of fun for the whole family. Events include live music, hangar dance, and fun, fun, fun. View the displays of airplanes, antique tractors, and classic cars. All proceeds fund scholarships for Panola College students. Participants will receive a beautifully done QSL card by sending a SASE.

    October 27 – Jim Reeves Memorial

    An annual event held at the graveside memorial of Country legend, Jim Reeves. Born in Eastern Panola County near DeBerry, Texas, Reeves came to be known in the Nashville music business as “Gentleman Jim” and “Mr. Velvet”. His rich velvet voice and kindly manner brought him fame and many friends. Killed in a private plane crash, such friends as Eddy Arnold, Marty Robbins, Chet Atkins, Ernest Tubb, and Stonewall Jackson were in the search party. Winner of the Jim Reeves Award for international promotion of country music in 2006 was Louise Scruggs, wife of renowned Earl Scruggs.
